University of Oulu - NICT Joint 6G Workshop 2025 Held
On July 4, 2025, the "University of Oulu - NICT Joint 6G Workshop 2025" was held at the NICT Innovation Center in Nihombashi, Tokyo.
This workshop followed the first session held at the University of Oulu in Finland in October 2024. Its aim was to exchange research findings between NICT and the University of Oulu and to strengthen collaboration in anticipation of the 6G era.
Dr. Marja Matinmikko-Blue(Researcher Profile), Research Director at the University of Oulu and a leading international expert in spectrum sharing and spectrum policy, participated as a counterpart. She leads research on building open 6G environments under the 6G Flagship project.
Workshop Overview
The workshop was conducted in a hybrid format, combining in-person and online participation, with a total of 23 attendees. The event opened with a welcome address by NICT Executive Director Dr. Akutsu, followed by an introduction from Dr. Toyoshima, Director of the Wireless Networks Research Center, who presented NICT’s research framework and initiatives in B5G wireless communications, including non-terrestrial networks.
From the University of Oulu, Dr. Marja Matinmikko-Blue gave a presentation outlining the progress of the 6G Flagship and other collaborative projects with European institutions and NOKIA.In the research session, seven presentations were delivered by members of the 6G Flagship team, NICT’s Moonshot and spectrum expansion projects, as well as Professor Mikio Hasegawa from Tokyo University of Science and Professor Takeo Fujii from the University of Electro-Communications.
Dr. Matinmikko-Blue attended in person, while 12 participants from the University of Oulu joined online. The session featured lively discussions and Q&A that extended over 30 minutes beyond the scheduled time, resulting in fruitful exchanges on regulatory frameworks and technical approaches for 6G.
Looking Ahead
Following the workshop, an open discussion was held to explore future collaboration. Topics included comparative analysis of legal systems and licensing policies for local 5G/6G, and joint research on spectrum sharing technologies.
It was agreed that the third workshop will be held at the University of Oulu in mid-May 2026.
This workshop provided a valuable opportunity to share research achievements from both Finland and Japan, and to further explore possibilities for collaboration toward B5G/6G. NICT and the University of Oulu will continue to contribute to global problem-solving and technological advancement through ongoing dialogue and cooperation.
